Santa Tresa

Santa Tresa is a historic winery in Vittoria, in the southeast of Sicily, with a history dating back to 1697. Since 2002, the estate has been under the leadership of Stefano and Marina Girelli, who have restored the property and completely transformed it into an organic wine business.
Sustainability and biodiversity are central to the 50 hectares of vineyards. The characteristic Terra Rossa soils, with a limestone sublayer, provide a natural water supply for the vines, while cooling sea breezes contribute to optimal ripening conditions.
Santa Tresa primarily produces wines from indigenous Sicilian grape varieties such as Frappato, Nero d'Avola, and Grillo. With minimal intervention in the cellar and maximum attention in the vineyard, pure, elegant wines are created that reflect the character of Sicily. Moreover, the winery is among the leading producers of Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, the only DOCG wine from Sicily.

Santa Tresa
The Santa Tresa line is the winery’s flagship and embodies what the estate stands for: organic viticulture, local grape varieties, and respect for the wine’s origins. Within this line, the focus is on the Vittoria region, one of Sicily’s most renowned wine regions, where Frappato and Nero d’Avola find their finest expression.
Insieme
Insieme means “together” and refers to the blending of grape varieties that complement each other. The line consists of creative blends that combine Sicilian and, at times, international grape varieties. The goal is not to highlight a single grape variety, but rather to create harmony, balance, and drinking pleasure.
Cortese
Cortese is Santa Tresa’s sister winery and is entirely dedicated to Sicily’s rich culture and biodiversity. The organic wines are made from authentic grape varieties such as Frappato, Carricante, and Nero d'Avola, bringing the many facets of Sicily to life. With their striking labels and distinct regional character, Cortese wines are a contemporary ode to the island and its traditions.

The story of Santa Tresa
Organic Viticulture
At Santa Tresa, organic viticulture is central to our philosophy. The vineyards benefit from the warm Sicilian climate, the cooling sea breeze, and the characteristic Terra Rossa soil, whose limestone-rich subsoil stores water for dry periods. This allows the grapes to ripen healthily with minimal human intervention. That same philosophy is carried through in the cellar, ensuring that the wines reflect their origin and grape variety as purely as possible.
Respect for Nature and Biodiversity
For Santa Tresa, a vineyard is more than just a place where grapes grow. Various plant and animal species coexist on the estate, ranging from wild herbs to local wildlife. This biodiversity contributes to a natural balance in the vineyards and underscores the belief that good wine begins with a healthy environment. For Santa Tresa, sustainability is therefore a natural way of working, not merely a certification.
Authentic Sicilian Identity
The winery deliberately focuses on native grape varieties that are inextricably linked to Sicily, such as Frappato, Nero d'Avola, and Grillo. By placing these grapes at the center of its winemaking, Santa Tresa produces wines that reflect the character of the region: lively, expressive, and full of Mediterranean charm. Each wine thus tells a piece of the story of Vittoria and its unique terroir.
Tradition with an eye toward the future
Santa Tresa has been part of Sicilian wine history since 1697. The winery combines centuries-old knowledge of the region with modern, sustainable viticulture and works in an experimental vineyard with very old and sometimes even extinct grape varieties. For example, Santa Tresa revived Albanello (found in the Insieme Bianco) and contributed to the official recognition of Orisi. A fine example of how tradition and innovation come together in wines that remain true to their Sicilian origins.
